Naturalist association of the Loing Valley

The herbarium of the ANVL (Naturalist Association of the Loing Valley and Fontainebleau massif) was built thanks to donations and legacies. It is composed of about 4,000 species of phanerogams, and 450 species of bryophytes (distributed among 1,200 samples). The computerized inventory of the collections is complete. The restoration of a part of the herbarium, as well as the assembly of unattached specimens, are still in progress.

There are over 600 species collected in Algeria, mostly by G.L Durando between 1851 and 1861 (poaceae, asteraceae, brassicaceae…), other collects were made in France between 1850 and 1980, mostly in the Paris region :

  • Oise and Yvelines, 450 specimens collected by Alber Petit, lawyer, between 1860 and 1873 ;
  • Fontainebleau region, collects from Henri Flon and Jean Vivian, former presidents of the association (900 phanerogams and 150 bryophytes) between 1920 and 1980 ;
  • Pyrenees, Luchon region, 100 orophytes and 200 bryophytes from the Charles Fourcade herbarium (around 1865) ;
  • Barcelonnette surroundings, 130 specimens collected around 1865 without collector's name.

The association also keeps an herbarium of mosses and liverworts composed by Pierre Doignon between 1943 and 1944, only on the Fontainebleau forest and its immediate surroundings (800 sheets for 250 species).

The ANVL goal is to contribute through observations, research, and the various works of its members, to the broadening of scientific knowledges and the establishment of protective measures in its field of study. Its primarily focus is on the Fontainebleau Massif, that goes from, Romilly-sur-Seine in the East, to the valley of Essonne in the West, and from the sources of the Loing in the South, to the melunaise agglomeration in the North.

The ANVL, founded in 1913, is also a founding member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and is housed in the Fontainebleau-Avon plant biology laboratory which belongs to the University – Paris VII.
