J-J. Rousseau's Herbarium is online!

Shortly before his death, the philosopher acquired a collection organized in a series of 15 red hardcover binders bearing his name.

This herbarium contains 496 plants that were gathered by Jean-Baptiste Fusée Aublet (1720-1778), pharmacist, botanist and author of the first description of French Guiana’s flora. The plants, attached on recovered notarial documents, originate from mainland France, Spain as well as Guiana.

A number of samples are “types”(reference specimens for botanists) since there lies a real convergence between Aublet’s drawings and these specimens.
